# Is "catalog" a mandatory database?

A Stardog Free instance allows a maximum of 3 databases, but that is not true if "catalog" is required by the implementation.

Can the catalog db be removed?

The catalog database is used to enable the functionality of the Knowledge Catalog, which is described [here in the docs](https://docs.stardog.com/knowledge-catalog/).
